Did horse sacrifice took place during the Ashwamedh yagna? (en.wikipedia.org) Hindu Scriptures

Did ashvemedha Yagna include horse sacrifice?  because above link says its a vedic ritual involving horse sacrifice but our vedas dont advice on killing an animal.
