How strictly was it enforced? Did it mean only crossing the seas or even going out of the subcontinent?
I am aware of ambassadors of some SI kings to China, the Cholas expanding beyond India, etc. So, how seriously did Hindus of the past take this restriction?
What if someone has gone overseas? Is there anything s/he should do in penance?
