Apart from Hinduism,7 other religions have done persecution and genocide of Buddhists in Asia-

    Confucianism,taoism in China

    ,bonpo in tibet

    tengrism in mongolia

    Shintoism in Japan

    Islam in Central Asia

    Zoroastrianism in Iran

Do Buddhists want to take revenge from all of them.Further Communists have also destroyed tens of thousands of Buddhist temples, monasteries, buddha;s statues in China,Vietnam,Cambodia etc

Also Buddhists themselves have done persecution and genocide of Hindus in South East Asian countries

Indian Buddhists followed Hindu cultural traditions. So Buddhism didn’t disappear from India (other than the Islamic destruction of monasteries and shrines) it simply merged, like sugar in milk.

Buddhism as a religion can't survive without syncretism. Almost all Buddhists follow an additional religion as the Buddhas cannot provide for material things.Tibetans follow Bon, Burmese worship Nats, Han Chinese and Japanese combine it with Confucian/Shinto

The ultrareligiosity against these traditions is more of a clergy thing who try to restrict these as much as possible.Kings again try to contain influence on monks as it leads to celibacy and destroys demography. One key reason why Buddhism routinely gets wiped out from China.

One reason why places like Tibet and Mongolia are so sparse today is because of high degree of monasticism. When 1/3 of your able bodied men become celibate monks, your TFR is bound to tank. A smallpox epidemic in Mongolia wiped out most of the Mongol monks in China once, iirc

DN Jha problem is he is getting info from Buddhist sources which were written much later, are fictional, unreliable. e.g. claims Maurya Pushyamitra went south with a "huge" army to destroy Buddhist monasteries, but one lion roared, sacred the huge army, so they went back to Pataliputra! Divyadavana has many such absurd claims to any informed, critical scholar.almost all buddhist texts have this case illustrated
