This is too open ended a question. But to have some contemporary relevance in the sense that the disaster is still reversible, I would nominate the adoption of the British made Constitution, Governance and PANGOLIN* mythology and “divide to rule” policies

Democracies are distinguished from Majoritarian Mobocracies (ochlocracies) by equality under law and the rule of law. Hence a Constitution becomes important.

Any people need laws by which they know how they stand with their fellows and other peoples by which they define who, what and why they are what and how they may do.

However, as India does not have equality under law and rule of law, it comprises several majoritarian mobocracies in constant civil war

If the Constitution is (unlike India’s) well conceived and designed for the equal benefit of all citizens it will yield social stability, harmony and a framework of laws and institutions that foster prosperity and empowerment for all citizens thus building a strong and powerful nation.

India is not secular, democratic or a Nation. The Constitution rations privileges and entitlements, favouring some at others' cost, including the right to education and employment, own property, avoid taxes and contest elections, on the basis of caste, tribe, religion, gender, geography, gratification, proximity to power and so on

The Government of India Act (1935) was modified by Sir Maurice Gwyer, then Chief Justice of Delhi, for Nehru and Ambedkar to plagiarize into the Indian Constitution, and into which they embroidered ideas that they borrowed from George Orwell’s “Animal Farm”, such as “All animals are equal, but some are more equal than others” and “Four legs good, two legs bad”

The Constitution condemned India to a perpetual state of civil war by stealing from some for the benefit of others on the basis of caste, tribe, religion and proximity to power, to keep India in constant poverty, importing goods and services and exporting wealth for the exclusive benefit of the Nouveau Kleptocracy.

A nation locked in the iron maiden of the British legacy Judiciary, Bureaucracy, Police, garnished with self serving politicians, and raised on the gibbet of the Reservations-Extortion Constitution and laws to fall to 135 out of 172 countries (and below Sub-Saharan Africa) in the Global Human and Social Development Index (UNDP – 2016) and 143 rd out of 172 countries in internal Peace and Stability (UNDP – 2016) , home to 30% of the World’s poor (World Bank 2016) and with the highest number of Bomb Blasts in the World (2016) pushing Iraq to a lowly second place with just half as many; in just 67 years. India ranks 107 out of 124 countries in corruption free law enforcement and personal security. And in 2018 achieved the distinction of ranking 81 on the list of corrupt countries, ranked from Least Corrupt downwards!

The problem is Constitutional. If suicide is self murder, then surely, the British-Nehru-Gandhi-Ambedkar-Naiker-Chittaranjan Das Constitution is Self Genocide

The Government of India Act (1935) which was modified by Sir Maurice Gwyer for Nehru and Ambedkar to plagiarize into the Indian Constitution, and into which they embroidered ideas that they borrowed from George Orwell’s “Animal Farm”, such as “All animals are equal, but some are more equal than others” and “Four legs good, two legs bad”, envisaged that the Governor General representing the British Crown would attend to Defense, National Security, Foreign Policy and matters of propriety, while the Council of Princes (now known as Rajya Sabha) would maintain stability and cultural continuity. But with their abolition, India has enjoyed a vacuum in all these spheres since 1949.

One symptom is that India looks to foreign countries for leadership and initiatives in these areas while focusing on Loot, Rape, and Persecution (including reservations) within the Country instead of on becoming powerful and prosperous.

Divisiveness and separatism is as integral to the Indian Constitution as inequality under law. Draavidism, Islam, Akalism and Daalitism were the primary centrifugal forces set in motion by the British which dominate India polity today.

The Indian State is above any kind of responsibility or accountability. It is the most powerful criminal enterprise on the sub-continent. So conceived, created, nurtured and maintained.

The Constitution was designed by the British and championed by British stooges to keep India in a perpetual state of debilitating civil war, importing goods through celebrated incompetence and non accountability and exporting wealth through extortion.

India is a mug because, instead of developing it's strengths and building on them, India develops its weaknesses and builds on them while imitating those far more wealthy and powerful.

India is not secular, democratic or a Nation. The Constitution rations privileges and entitlements, favouring some at others' cost, including the right to education and employment, own property, avoid taxes, freedom of religion and to contest elections, on the basis of caste, tribe, religion, gender, geography and so on.

In 2018, India achieved the distinction of 81st Rank in corruption, with 80 countries of the World less corrupt than itself.
