Sorry for your loss, and may your Appaji attain sadgati!
Coming to your Q, we do have a ritual we follow after one's death. It is done on 30th day, where in evening puja is done for the departed ātma and everyone prays to Bhagwan that ātma attains sadgati.
Once puja is done, a glass is filled with soil and kept before the picture of departed. In the morning next day, if you see any markings in the soil (usually resembling cats paw - ), it means departed ātma would be reborn.
Another thing my kula-jyotish told me that since am born in Rushabh Rashi, this would be my last birth. Not sure how much true this is, but I'm unusually inclined towards performing good deeds - irrespective of how am treated.
Hope this helps you get a closure.
Shivoham!
