Some Notes

Numerous inscriptions of Śhūdra sovereigns from medieval Andhra exist of which the Vilasa inscription of Prolaya stands out. a) It’s the first ever instance of a native power identifying itself as ‘HINDU’ as against ‘Turushkas’. The very birth of Hindu Consciousness.

    b) Possibly, the first ever epigraphical evidence of the cruelty dealt by Muslim invasions on native populations especially on Brāhmaṇas and their agrahāras. c) Extolling Śhūdra the lineage as the uplifters of Brāhmaṇatva in Bhārata.(2/n)

It reads …….When the sun, viz. Pratāparudra, set, the world was enveloped in the Turushka darkness. The evil (adharma), which he had up to that time kept under check, flourished under them, as the conditions were very favourable for its growth. (3/n)

Brāhmaṇas were compelled to abandon their religious practices ; the images of the gods were overturned and broken; the agrahāras of the learned were confiscated; the cultivators were despoiled of the fruits of their labour and their families were impoverished and ruined. (4/n)

None dared to lay claim to anything, whether it was a piece of property or one’s own wife. To those despicable wretches wine was the ordinary drink, beef the staple food, and the slaying of the Brāhmaṇas the favourite pastime. (5/n)

The land of Tiliṅga, left without a protector, suffered destruction from the Yavanas like a forest subjected to devastating wild fire. (6/n)

Then was born, as of an aṁśa of the god Vishṇu, who took pity on the sufferings of the people, had descended from heaven, king Prōla of the Musunūri family of the fourth caste, who assumed the sovereignty of the earth.(7/n)

He destroyed the power of the Yavanas, who abandoned their forts and fled to unknown places unable to resist his might. The very people who suffered at the hands of the Yavanas sought protection under him, and turned against them and put them to death.(8/n)

Having overcome the Yavanas in this fashion, he restored to Brāhmaṇas their ancient agrahāras confiscated by them, and revived the performance of the sacrifices.(9/n)

the smoke issuing from the firepits of which spreading over the countryside cleaned it of the pollution caused by the movements of those evil-doers.(10/n)

The agriculturists surrendered willingly a sixth of the produce of the soil to king ; and he set his hand to the task of repairing the damages caused by the Pāraśīkas. King Prōla established himself at Rēkapalli on the Gōdāvarī at the foot of the Mālyavanta mountain;(11/n)

Having entrusted the administration to his younger brothers such as Kāpaya-nāyaka, he devoted himself to the performance of charitable and meritorious deeds. He granted many agrahāras and large sums of money to deserving scholars.

Epigraphica Indica Volume 13 mentions of Akkalapundi grant of a Shudra King Singaya- Nayaka who proudly declares to have come from Vishnu's feet from where river Bhagirathi originates and henceforth purest of all varnas and also tells us of the harmonious cooperation that prevailed between Shudras and Kshatriyas.

Here's the relevant excerpts;“(V. 5.) The three castes, (viz.) the Brahmanas and the next (Kshatrlyas and Vaisyas) were produced from the face, the arms and the thighs of the Lord (Isvara) ; and for their support was born the fourth caste from his (i.e,, Isvara’s) feet(V.6.) That this caste is more pure than those (other three) is self-evident ; for verily) this caste was born along with the (river) Bhagirathl, (i.e. the Ganges [which springs from Vishnu’s foot), the purifier of the three worlds.(V. 7.)

The members of this caste are eagerly attentive to their duties, not wicked, pure minded, and are devoid of passion and other such blemishes ; (they) ably bear all the burden of (protecting) the earth by helping those born in the kingly caste.”

Fascinating group the Brahmins are. A tiny minority tied to temples in which they didn’t permit most and living in ghettos disconnected from other populace is suddenly credited with incredible things — manipulating all of history, building oppressive social systems, destroying major religions, destroying major civilizations, usurping all the religious ideas of others, enslaving people. The list of achievements Indians ascribe to a group of 2–3% people with no empires of their own, no lands, no wealth is simply fascinating.
