As part of my ongoing interest in Indian classical music and the Bansuri (Indian bamboo flute), I created a small web-based Bansuri Practice Metronome Tool to help students practice alankar (note patterns) with rhythm, pitch, and directional control. The tool is now freely accessible on HinduMediaWiki.com.

What does the tool do?

This tool is designed for structured Bansuri practice, especially for beginners and intermediate players who want to work on:

  • Note patterns (Alankars): You can input custom patterns like 1,2,1,2,3 to be expanded across the Bansuri's scale.

  • Tempo control: Set your desired BPM to control the practice speed.

  • Notes per beat: Choose how many notes should be played per beat.

  • Ascending or Descending practice: Practice going up or down the scale, or alternate between both.

  • Pitch-based playback: The tool plays realistic sine tones mapped to notes (e.g., Sa, Re, Ga...) based on the chosen scale (like E4, C4, D#4).

  • Visual grid display: Notes are shown on-screen in a stair-step grid (Pa–PA and pa–Ma), with current notes highlighted as the tool plays through them.

This is just v1, and a few key features are intentionally left for future releases:

  • Pitch detection from mic – to analyze live playing and give real-time feedback.

  • Pitch matching analysis – to visually show how well your played note matches the expected tone.

  • Loop mode or note hold controls – for slow or advanced practice.

  • Swara syllable audio samples – so instead of sine tones, users hear realistic bansuri or voiced sounds.

If you’re a Bansuri learner or interested in Indian classical music, give it a spin and let me know how it can be improved. This is a personal side project and feedback is always welcome!
